Smart Restrooms

Smart public restroom systems

Positioning

Sensors, IoT connectivity, guidance displays and a management platform address difficulty finding facilities, odours, queues, depleted supplies and inefficient maintenance. The aim is measurable conditions, visible occupancy, controlled cleaning and assessable service. Applications include attractions, transport hubs, municipal facilities, hospitals, schools, service areas, stadiums and rural improvements.

Core functions

Environment and facility sensing

  • Monitor ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, with methane and TVOC as options. Link threshold alerts to ventilation and deodorisation.

  • Measure temperature, humidity, odour indicators, illumination and noise.

  • Use infrared, millimetre-wave or other non-imaging presence sensors, together with door contacts, to determine occupancy and count available cubicles.

  • Monitor tank levels, water pressure and leaks, lighting and ventilation faults, lock anomalies and SOS calls.

Guidance and public service

Entrance displays can show occupancy maps, male/female, accessible and family-facility availability, queue counts and estimated waiting times. Voice and light prompts can indicate availability, extended occupancy and assistance for children or older users. QR-code feedback, complaints, cleaner-call buttons, multilingual accessible audio, parent-and-baby information, hygiene guidance, emergency messages, weather and visitor information can be integrated.

Automation and resource use

Options include sensor-operated flushing, fragrance or deodorising dispensers and floor drying. UV or ozone disinfection requires unoccupied-area operation and suitable safety controls. Metered taps and flushing, occupancy-based lighting, demand-controlled ventilation, solar power and low-power equipment support resource management. Paper, soap and deodoriser levels can trigger replenishment work orders.

Management platform

A map brings together multiple sites, live conditions, occupancy, cleaning records and complaint follow-up. Cleaning functions cover task templates, shift planning, check-in, spot inspections and performance statistics. Reporting may include cleanliness scores, odour-threshold exceedances, response times, peak use, cubicle allocation and water, electricity and carbon reporting, with integration to municipal or tourism management where required.

Technical approach

Sensing devices connect through RS485/Modbus, LoRa, NB-IoT or 4G gateways with edge caching. The platform manages devices, rules, alerts, work orders and reports; applications serve managers, cleaning teams and guidance displays.

  • Select moisture- and corrosion-resistant sensors, including protection against sulphide corrosion. Standardise installation height and sampling positions. The reference maintenance interval for calibration is 6–12 months, subject to the sensor specification and site conditions.

  • Do not point cameras into toilet or cubicle areas. Determine occupancy without images. Any optional entrance-area video requires appropriate privacy review and notices.

  • Keep local deodorising and flushing rules operating during network loss and cache alerts. Use suitable waterproof power supplies and electrical leakage protection.

  • For China deployments, review CJJ 14 public-restroom design requirements, GB/T 18973 tourism-restroom evaluation and relevant accessibility rules. Confirm family facilities, baby-changing tables, handrails and emergency calls against the applicable project requirements.

Implementation

Survey footfall, existing issues, water and electrical services. Design sensor locations, wiring and protection, validate one demonstration room, then install in stages to limit disruption. Deploy the platform, tune odour and occupancy thresholds, train cleaning teams and establish SOPs. Acceptance should cover sensor accuracy, linked alerts and water-saving performance. Plan calibration, spare parts and consumables for ongoing operations.

Intended benefits

The goals are fewer odour complaints, more efficient cleaning, shorter queues, lower water, electricity and supply costs, and improved public satisfaction. Results depend on the facility and operating process.
