BOE, a leading company in the semiconductor display industry, is working with China Mobile Beijing to introduce 5G, RFID, machine vision, augmented reality and robotics to its fifth-generation TFT-LCD production line. An industrial internet architecture connecting cloud services, edge computing and terminals brings previously isolated production units together.
The Chinese source article describes this as mainland China’s first LCD-panel production line built using independently developed technology. Beijing Mobile designed a digital production and operations platform around 5G connectivity and cloud-edge-terminal collaboration. It combines material inventory management, automated quality inspection, remote maintenance and unmanned patrol inspections, providing a foundation for increasing capacity, reducing losses and developing smart manufacturing.
5G and RFID for material management
Beijing Mobile combines 5G with radio-frequency identification (RFID) to support warehouse material management and accurate material transport for the TFT-LCD line. Automated batch inventory counting, networked location tracking and first-in, first-out monitoring replace offline manual records with digital management throughout the process. The source reports an efficiency improvement of more than eightfold.
5G and machine vision for quality inspection
The inspection solution combines a high-speed 5G network, microscope cameras, artificial intelligence and edge computing to support visual inspection at the micrometre scale. The source reports 99% accuracy in secondary verification and annual savings of 8,640 inspection hours.
5G and augmented reality for remote assistance
The remote assistance solution overlays equipment information on the industrial scene and adds fault-location markers and voice assistance. If equipment fails, experts can communicate with technicians on site through high-definition video and guide repairs and the restoration of production without travelling to the factory. The article reports a threefold improvement in efficiency compared with the previous approach, helping reduce maintenance costs and production losses.
5G robots for patrol inspections
Some safety areas require scheduled inspections. Replacing manual patrols with 5G robots allows an operator to monitor the work remotely. The robots identify and collect information, transmit data and perform intelligent analysis to help detect safety risks. This reduces the need for staff to carry out routine patrols in those areas.
Further industrial applications
According to Beijing Mobile’s project lead, the collaboration demonstrates the potential of 5G across several stages of smart manufacturing. Beijing Mobile plans to deepen its cooperation with BOE and other industry leaders, explore further applications and support the digital transformation and sustainable development of high-technology manufacturers.
The results above are those reported in the Chinese article dated 14 February 2024. They describe this project and are not performance guarantees for other deployments.
